Students should be given an opportunity to use new vocabulary in practice while listening to a song. There is no question that new words need to be integrated into existing knowledge – mental lexicon. For this can apply different activities for example matching, sorting, comparing, combining, etc.

In the following, there are different activities that can be used with songs and vocabulary learning.

💥CLOZE OR GAP FILLING 💥

This is the best-known and most popular activity.

  • Have a goal, whether it's vocabulary, prepositions, or whatever.
  • Don't do three or more cloze in a row.
  • For lower levels: give the first letter, omit word endings, give hyphens for letters, or give a glossary.
  • Give vocabulary clues or synonyms for missing words.
  • Have students work in pairs to predict the words before playing the song.
  • Insert additional words that students will cross out as they listen.
  • Repeat several words in a row and students will have to guess not only the form (adj., adv., n., vb, prep.), but also the words, rhythm, and rhyme.
