INFLUENCE OF THE MUSIC ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE - USING MUSIC IN CLASSROOM AS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
😎This part of the blog focuses on how the
use of music can be particularly meaningful in an EFL classroom. This practice
helps to identify/observe language elements in context, but also improves your
ability to retain information and music has the ability to bridge cultures and
languages. 👌
For example:
🅱efore you play any music: It is prudent to find out students’ choice of music. Songs with repetitive verses are better because can be used with ease and students can understand. For advanced-level users of the language, songs with complex language structures and concepts too
🆆arm up: Music can be used as a good
introduction to a lesson, just to warm them up for a lesson. For example,
Michael Jackson's 'Earth Song' can be used to talk about environmental
concerns. A song with an easy-to-repeat chorus.
🅶rammar: Music is particularly useful for
teaching grammatical structures, our brains are wired to process information.
After working with the lyrics of a song, students can focus on some examples of
grammatical structure. For example, for example, to teach the present
continuous, I use the song 🎶"In the Shadows" by The Rasmus 🎸 I use the lyrics as a
worksheet, without the past participles and main verbs in the lines with the
target language. The context of the song further helps to establish the use and
meaning of the present perfect continuous.
🆅ocabulary: Music can serve as an excellent
teaching tool when learning new words using new genres of music. One suggestion
may be to play soft music while the students list some adjectives that come to
mind. Play different genres of music such as reggae, blues, rock, etc. A lyrics
worksheet with blanks can be shared with them before they listen to the song
and fill in the words in the blanks. This way students learn the meaning of new
vocabulary words.
